Tennis Size Guide
TENNIS RACKET GRIP SIZE
The right grip size helps you to avoid strains and injuries, caused by having to clench too much (sometimes a cause of tennis elbow) to stop the racket twisting in your hand. Too big a handle restricts your ability to “snap” on serves. Size is typically indicated as L1, L2, etc. or in inches, e.g. 4 1/8", 4 1/4".
There are two ways to work out your grip size.
- The most accurate method of determining the correct grip size is to measure the length from the tip of the ring finger to the middle of the palm of the hand (2nd line). This is your hand measurement. Each measurement corresponds to a matched grip size.
- Or hold a racket. You want to be able to put an index finger between the base of palm and the tips of your fingers.
If you’re an adult and in between, get the smaller handle and buy an over grip or use a heat-shrink grip enlarger. If it’s for a child, get the bigger size as the child is still growing. Women often like smaller grips, or may prefer a larger grip for larger hand span, so it’s important to get one that suits your hand size.
